Drunk Driver Sentenced After Deadly Crash That Killed Heroic Utah Pedestrian

A Utah man who was found to be driving with a blood alcohol level more than six times the legal limit has been sentenced to prison after causing a crash that killed a pedestrian in Springville.

Travis Patrick McIntyre, 42, was sentenced to an indeterminate term of five to 15 years in Utah State Prison after pleading guilty to one count of automobile homicide. Several other charges were dismissed as part of a plea agreement.

The fatal crash occurred on September 3, 2025, near 400 South and 40 East in Springville. Authorities said McIntyre was driving a truck while pulling a trailer when he left the roadway and struck pedestrian Matthew Daines.

Investigators determined that McIntyre was heavily intoxicated at the time of the collision, with a blood alcohol concentration exceeding six times Utah’s legal limit.

During Tuesday’s sentencing hearing, nearly three dozen victim impact statements were presented to the court, highlighting the devastating impact the crash had on Daines’ family, friends, and the wider community.

The case drew significant attention because Daines reportedly pushed his wife out of the path of the oncoming vehicle moments before he was struck, an act many described as heroic.

Following the sentencing, McIntyre will serve his prison term under the custody of the Utah Department of Corrections. The case serves as another tragic reminder of the deadly consequences of impaired driving and the lives forever changed by the decision to get behind the wheel while intoxicated.
