Wrong-Way Driver Killed in Head-On Crash While Fleeing Police on Route 146
A man from Connecticut died early Saturday morning after allegedly fleeing police and driving the wrong way on Route 146 in Millbury, resulting in a head-on collision.
According to the Massachusetts State Police, the incident began around 12:45 a.m. when troopers conducted a traffic stop on the Massachusetts Turnpike. Authorities said the driver initially pulled over but sped away as a trooper approached the vehicle.
An alert was issued to surrounding law enforcement agencies, and shortly before 1 a.m., the vehicle was spotted entering Route 146 in Millbury and traveling south in the northbound lanes.
Police attempted to stop the vehicle and deployed a Stop Stick in an effort to deflate its tires. The pursuit ended when the vehicle crashed head-on into another car between the ramps at Exit 17.
The wrong-way driver, described only as a man in his 20s from Connecticut, died from his injuries at the scene. Authorities have not yet released his identity.
The driver of the other vehicle survived and sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
Traffic was diverted while investigators processed the scene, with all lanes reopening by approximately 4:30 a.m.
State police said the crash remains under investigation.
