Two Nurses Killed in Australia While Trying to Rescue Kangaroo
In an act of compassion that ended in tragedy, two Melbourne nurses, both aged 30, lost their lives after being struck by a car while attempting to rescue an injured kangaroo along the Hume Freeway on Saturday night.
The victims, later identified as Areeza Suwal and Sarala Khadka, had pulled over after spotting the animal on the roadside. On their way to celebrate Areeza’s birthday, the friends stopped to help but were struck by an oncoming vehicle.
Emergency services rushed to the scene. Sarala was pronounced dead immediately, while Areeza was transported to hospital but later succumbed to her injuries. The driver of the vehicle, who was not impaired, remained on-site and cooperated fully with police.
Authorities described the incident as “a heartbreaking reminder of the risks of roadside emergencies, especially at night on high-speed roads.” Road safety experts are now urging motorists to exercise extreme caution when pulling over, even for acts of kindness.
The tragedy has shaken Melbourne’s Nepalese community, where both women were well known and respected for their dedication to healthcare. Colleagues described them as “selfless and caring individuals who lived to help others.” A candlelight vigil is being organized in their memory, while fundraising efforts are underway to support their families.
Social media has been flooded with tributes, with many hailing their final act as one of bravery and compassion. “They died helping,” one post read. “The world has lost two angels too soon.”
