Authorities in Augusta temporarily shut down a section of Gordon Highway on Wednesday afternoon after a body was discovered in a pond near the 1200 block of the roadway.
The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the incident, while the Richmond County Coroner’s Office later identified the deceased as Calvin Williams. Officials said the identification was made through fingerprint analysis.
Due to the ongoing investigation, eastbound lanes of Gordon Highway at Doug Barnard Parkway were closed for several hours, and motorists were advised to use alternate routes and expect delays.
Multiple agencies responded to the scene, including the Augusta Fire Department, the Coroner’s Office, and the Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Division.
Authorities have not yet released additional details regarding the circumstances surrounding Williams’ death, and the investigation remains ongoing.
