Retired Auburn Professor Killed in Apparent Knife Attack at Kiesel Park
AUBURN, Ala. – The Auburn community is mourning the tragic loss of Dr. Julie Gard Schnuelle, 59, a retired Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine professor, who was killed while walking her dog at Kiesel Park on Saturday.
According to the Lee County Coroner’s Office, Schnuelle’s injuries are consistent with a sharp object, indicating she was the victim of a knife attack. Emergency responders were dispatched to the park following reports of an assault. Despite life-saving efforts, Schnuelle was pronounced dead at the scene. Her dog was found unharmed.
Auburn Police confirmed that a person of interest connected to the case has been taken into custody. However, officials have not released the individual’s identity or indicated whether formal charges have been filed. Investigators continue to process evidence and interview witnesses.
Schnuelle was a respected educator and mentor during her long tenure at Auburn University, where she specialized in veterinary medicine before retiring.
