💔 Father Fatally Shot While Defending Teenage Daughter, Police Say
A North Carolina community is mourning the loss of Lester Jones, 47, who was killed while attempting to protect his teenage daughter during a violent domestic dispute, according to authorities.
Police say the incident occurred early Monday, June 1, at a home in Concord. Investigators allege that Jones intervened after his 16-year-old daughter’s boyfriend, Keshaun Tirrell Degraffenreid, 17, became physically aggressive toward her.
According to police, Degraffenreid then opened fire, striking both Jones and the teenager. Responding officers found the victims suffering from gunshot wounds. Jones was pronounced dead at the scene, while his daughter was transported to a hospital for treatment. Her current condition has not been publicly released.
Authorities say the suspect fled on foot but was quickly located and arrested on a nearby street.
Degraffenreid has been charged as an adult with first-degree murder, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury, domestic violence offenses, and resisting officers. He also faces drug-related charges. Court records indicate he appeared before a judge on June 3 and is scheduled to return to court on June 18.
Neighbors described the tragedy as deeply upsetting, with many expressing admiration for Jones’ actions in trying to protect his daughter during a dangerous situation.
