Newly released CCTV footage has revealed the final moments of 21-year-old Courtney Angus before she was brutally murdered by Michael Doherty, a man she had met at a bar just hours before her death.
Doherty, 38, appeared before Leeds Crown Court on Thursday, May 28, where he was sentenced to life in prison with a minimum term of 33 years after admitting to murdering, sexually assaulting, and mutilating Courtney.
Police say the horrific attack happened after Courtney told Doherty she was not interested in pursuing a relationship with him.
Later that same day, officers responding to a robbery report in Dewsbury town centre confronted Doherty armed with a knife. He allegedly threatened police and attempted to enter a nearby pub before being subdued by Taser officers.
During the arrest, Doherty reportedly told officers he had killed someone and that a body could be found inside his home.
Courtneyβs body was later discovered at the address. A forensic examination confirmed she had been strangled and suffered injuries consistent with a serious sexual assault.
Detectives described Doherty as βa very dangerous man,β pointing to both the murder and the violent threats he made toward officers during his arrest.
In a heartbreaking statement, Courtneyβs family said:
βThe loss of Courtney has changed us all and we still cannot understand why she was so cruelly and suddenly taken from us.
Courtney was such a loving and vibrant young woman with her whole life ahead of her. She was a huge part of this family, and she will never be replaced.β
ποΈ Rest in peace, Courtney Angus.
