Young Man Fatally Shot, Another Injured in Brooklyn Double Shooting Near Victim’s Home

A 20-year-old man was fatally shot and another wounded in a broad daylight attack Thursday afternoon in Brooklyn, leaving a community shaken and police searching for answers.

The shooting erupted around 2:40 p.m. near Sutter Avenue and Euclid Avenue in East New York, just a short walk from the home of victim Darius Coles, police said.

The Shooting

According to investigators, Coles was struck in the chest when gunfire broke out on the busy block. Another 20-year-old man was shot in the leg and grazed on the head. Both collapsed as panicked neighbors ducked for cover.

“It was just pop-pop-pop, so fast,” said one witness, who asked not to be named. “I saw people screaming and running. It was broad daylight—kids were outside.”

Emergency Response

Emergency Medical Services rushed the victims to Brookdale University Hospital, where doctors pronounced Coles dead a short time later. The second victim is recovering in stable condition and is expected to survive, police said. His name has not yet been released.

Investigation

Police cordoned off the scene for hours as crime scene investigators marked shell casings and canvassed the area for surveillance footage. Detectives have not yet determined a motive, and no arrests have been made.

Authorities have urged anyone with information to come forward. “We need the community’s help,” an NYPD spokesperson said. “If you saw something, say something.”

Remembering the Victim

Friends and family identified the slain young man as Darius Coles, who lived just three blocks from where he was gunned down. Neighbors described him as a quiet young man with a big smile who often played basketball in the neighborhood.

“He was only 20. He had his whole life ahead of him,” said a family friend gathered near the crime scene Thursday evening. “He didn’t deserve this.”

Community Concerns

The shooting is the latest in a series of violent incidents that have rattled East New York, where residents have long called for more resources, better youth programs, and stronger police presence.

“This is heartbreaking but not surprising,” said one community activist. “Too many of our young men are dying before they have a chance to live. We need change.”

As candles and flowers began to appear near the intersection Thursday night, loved ones vowed to keep Coles’ memory alive while demanding justice for his death.
