Victim Identified in Kingsville Halloween Tragedy
Authorities have identified the victim in a tragic Halloween shooting that took the life of 18-year-old Katelynn Villarreal late Friday night.
According to the Kingsville Police Department (KPD), officers responded to reports of a shooting around 10:41 p.m. in the 300 block of West Kenedy Avenue. Upon arrival, they found Villarreal deceased from a gunshot wound to the head.
Investigators say witnesses reported a small Halloween gathering taking place in a backyard shed, where Larry Anthony Rodriguez, 18, allegedly pulled a firearm from a backpack and shot Villarreal once before fleeing the scene on foot. Only one shot was fired, and no other injuries were reported.
A warrant for first-degree murder was issued, and Rodriguez turned himself in to police the following afternoon.
Both Villarreal and Rodriguez were students at KISD CARE Academy. Superintendent Dr. Luz Martinez expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy, confirming that crisis counselors will be available to support students and staff.
The investigation remains ongoing as the Kingsville community mourns the loss of a young life cut tragically short.
