Auburn Police Charge Suspect in Murder of Retired Auburn Veterinary Professor
Authorities in Auburn, Alabama, have identified and charged a suspect in connection with the killing of Dr. Julie Gard Schnuelle, a 59-year-old retired Auburn University veterinary professor.
Schnuelle’s body was discovered around 2 p.m. on Saturday, September 6, 2025, in a wooded area of Kiesel Park. Police confirmed she died from injuries sustained in an assault. Kiesel Park, a 120-acre green space known for its 2.25-mile walking trail and popularity among families and dog owners, has since been closed during the investigation.
Investigators reported that a red Ford F-150 truck, missing from the crime scene, was later recovered along Wire Road (Lee Road 137).
On Sunday morning, September 7, Auburn Police responded to a report of a suspicious person near the 2300 block of Beehive Road. Officers made contact with Harold Rashad Dabney III, of Montgomery, Alabama. According to police, Dabney’s behavior and other observations linked him to the homicide.
Following further investigation, Dabney was charged with two counts of capital murder and transported to the Lee County Jail, where he remains held without bond. The stolen truck belonging to Schnuelle was also recovered.
“This was a beloved member of the Auburn community,” police noted, adding that Kiesel Park will remain closed through the weekend as investigators continue their work.
