Lee County Man Charged With Murder After Fatal Shooting of Stepfather in Salem

LEE COUNTY, AL — What began as a family gathering ended in tragedy Thursday evening when 51-year-old Richard Lee Huguley allegedly shot and killed his stepfather, 69-year-old James Barnett, in the Salem community.

Deputies with the Lee County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call at Lee Road 126 around 7:14 p.m. and found Barnett slumped in a chair in his own front yard, dead from a single gunshot wound to the forehead. Investigators later confirmed that the alleged murder weapon was a .38 Special revolver.

According to Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Jessica Henderson, Huguley was taken into custody without incident and has been charged with murder. He is currently being held at the Lee County Detention Center, awaiting an Aniah’s Law hearing, which will determine whether he is eligible for bond.

Authorities have not yet disclosed what may have led to the shooting, and investigators are continuing to piece together the events that escalated into deadly violence.

Neighbors and friends expressed shock at the sudden loss of Barnett, describing him as a man who enjoyed spending time outdoors and was known for his quiet, steady presence in the community.

65-Year-Old Passenger Killed in Baldwin County Crash; Driver Survives

BALDWIN COUNTY, AL — A tragic single-vehicle crash on Interstate 65 claimed the life of 65-year-old Thomas Oliver Swindle Jr. of Chickasaw on Thursday, September 4, 2025.

Emergency responders rushed to the scene near the 35-mile marker shortly after 4 p.m. and found Swindle trapped inside an overturned Jeep Cherokee. Despite immediate rescue efforts, he could not be saved and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver, identified as Leila M. Clevland of Selma, survived the crash. She was conscious when first responders arrived and was transported to University Hospital for treatment of her injuries.

Two Killed in Small Plane Crash Near Centennial Airport

The Beechcraft BE35 went down around 6:25 a.m., approximately half a mile southeast of the airport. South Metro Fire Rescue initially responded to reports of an explosion in the area and found the aircraft engulfed in flames near 8636 S. Peoria Street, an industrial zone.

Brian Willie, a spokesman for South Metro Fire Rescue, noted the generators posed a serious hazard due to their size and diesel fuel. Fortunately, crews prevented damage to surrounding structures.

Both occupants of the plane were killed on impact. Their identities have not yet been released; the Douglas County Coroner’s Office will release further information.

Man Arrested in Gwinnett County After Shooting Victim 17 Times, Leaving Body at Church

Police were called on July 22 to the parking lot of Cannon United Methodist Church off Webb Gin House Road in unincorporated Snellville, where Cruz was found dead. Cruz’s family describes him as a devoted father and a kind soul. His sister, Jessica Cruz, said in a statement:

“He was more than a sibling — he was a light in our lives, a devoted father, and truly one of the sweetest souls you could ever meet. His smile, his kindness, and the way he loved his son will never be forgotten.”

Authorities have not released a motive beyond the robbery, and the investigation into the case continues.

Los Angeles Police Search for Suspect in Fatal Hit-and-Run

LOS ANGELES, CA — Los Angeles police are actively searching for 24-year-old Sierra Whittaker, who is suspected of causing a fatal hit-and-run accident that killed 25-year-old Emerson Gonzalez-Escobar.
