    LEE COUNTY, AL — What began as a family gathering ended in tragedy Thursday evening when 51-year-old Richard Lee Huguley allegedly shot and killed his stepfather, 69-year-old James Barnett, in the Salem community.

    Deputies with the Lee County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call at Lee Road 126 around 7:14 p.m. and found Barnett slumped in a chair in his own front yard, dead from a single gunshot wound to the forehead. Investigators later confirmed that the alleged murder weapon was a .38 Special revolver.

    According to Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Jessica Henderson, Huguley was taken into custody without incident and has been charged with murder. He is currently being held at the Lee County Detention Center, awaiting an Aniah’s Law hearing, which will determine whether he is eligible for bond.

    Authorities have not yet disclosed what may have led to the shooting, and investigators are continuing to piece together the events that escalated into deadly violence.

    Neighbors and friends expressed shock at the sudden loss of Barnett, describing him as a man who enjoyed spending time outdoors and was known for his quiet, steady presence in the community.

    Investigators with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) remained at the site for hours, collecting evidence, examining skid marks, and working to determine the circumstances that caused the vehicle to suddenly leave the roadway and collide with a tree. Possible factors under review include speed, mechanical failure, and driver distraction.

    Swindle was remembered by those in the Chickasaw community as a warm, kindhearted man who had a way of bringing people together. Neighbors and friends described his presence as uplifting and said his sudden loss has left a deep void.

    The Beechcraft BE35 went down around 6:25 a.m., approximately half a mile southeast of the airport. South Metro Fire Rescue initially responded to reports of an explosion in the area and found the aircraft engulfed in flames near 8636 S. Peoria Street, an industrial zone.

    Firefighters worked quickly to extinguish the blaze, which was threatening a nearby building and a bank of large diesel-powered generators. Brian Willie, a spokesman for South Metro Fire Rescue, noted the generators posed a serious hazard due to their size and diesel fuel. Fortunately, crews prevented damage to surrounding structures.

    Both occupants of the plane were killed on impact. Their identities have not yet been released; the Douglas County Coroner’s Office will release further information.

    The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are investigating the crash. The NTSB will lead the investigation and provide updates as more information becomes available.

    Cruz’s family describes him as a devoted father and a kind soul. His sister, Jessica Cruz, said in a statement:

    “He was more than a sibling — he was a light in our lives, a devoted father, and truly one of the sweetest souls you could ever meet. His smile, his kindness, and the way he loved his son will never be forgotten.”

    Authorities have not released a motive beyond the robbery, and the investigation into the case continues.
