New Arrest in Shooting Death of Cleveland High Senior Kimber Mills

Authorities have made a new arrest in the ongoing investigation into the tragic shooting that claimed the life of Cleveland High School senior and cheerleader, Kimber Mills.

According to Jefferson County Jail records, 21-year-old Silas Aaron McCay of Remlap was booked on October 30, 2025, at 5:08 p.m. on a charge of third-degree assault. He is being held at the Jefferson County Jail in Birmingham on a $6,000 bond as a pretrial inmate.

Sources indicate McCay told investigators he was attempting to protect Kimber during the altercation that led to the deadly shooting earlier this month. However, officials have not confirmed his exact involvement or whether more charges will follow.

The fatal shooting occurred on October 18 near AL-75 and Clay-Palmerdale Road, during a bonfire gathering known as “The Pit.” Kimber was struck in the head and later died on October 21, surrounded by loved ones after an outpouring of community support.

Investigators continue to explore possible links between McCay’s arrest and the murder case of 27-year-old Steven Tyler Whitehead, who remains jailed on a murder charge. The case remains under active investigation.
