Man Fatally Shot During Struggle With Security Guard in Chicago’s South Loop
CHICAGO — A late-night confrontation in the South Loop turned deadly Friday when a 31-year-old man was fatally shot while wrestling a security guard for control of a gun, police said.
The incident unfolded around 9:28 p.m. in the 1300 block of South Michigan Avenue. Responding officers discovered the man lying on the sidewalk with a gunshot wound to his face and a firearm still in his hand, according to preliminary reports. Emergency responders pronounced him dead at the scene.
Investigators recovered a single shell casing nearby, marking the evidence of the deadly struggle.
Authorities say the altercation began as a verbal dispute inside a nearby business between the victim and a 32-year-old employee who was working as a security guard. The exchange escalated when the guard drew his weapon, sparking a physical fight for control of the firearm. During the struggle, the gun discharged, striking the 31-year-old in the head.
Police detained the security guard at the scene as detectives work to determine the exact sequence of events that led to the fatal shooting. Officials have not yet confirmed whether charges will be filed, pending further investigation and review by prosecutors.
The South Loop, a bustling neighborhood known for its mix of residential, retail, and nightlife, was rattled by the violence. The shooting adds to ongoing concerns about safety and conflict resolution in high-traffic areas of the city.
Authorities continue to urge witnesses to come forward as the investigation remains active.
