Man Fatally Shot by Police After Opening Fire on Patrol Cars in Jersey City

JERSEY CITY, N.J. — A man was shot and killed by police Friday afternoon after allegedly opening fire on two marked patrol vehicles in Jersey City, authorities said.

According to the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office, the incident unfolded around 1:20 p.m. on John F. Kennedy Boulevard near Clinton Avenue. Officials said a Jersey City Police Department sergeant engaged the man after multiple shots struck the cruisers as they traveled along the busy corridor.

Wayne Jones, a resident who witnessed the exchange, recalled the terrifying moments. “He came out of the store right at the corner. He had like an automatic handgun,” Jones told PIX11 News.

The suspect was rushed to the hospital in unknown condition at first but was later pronounced dead, the Attorney General’s Office confirmed Saturday morning. No officers were injured during the confrontation.

The shooting rattled the community as residents watched the street fill with police vehicles and crime scene tape in the aftermath. The area remained blocked off for hours as investigators combed through evidence and interviewed witnesses.

Authorities have not released the identity of the man involved, nor have they disclosed details about what may have prompted the gunfire at police vehicles. The Attorney General’s Office, which investigates all fatal police encounters in New Jersey, has taken over the case.

As the investigation continues, community members are left with unanswered questions about what led to the violent exchange in the heart of Jersey City.
