Man Fatally Shot by Family Member During Altercation in Oak Park Identified as Anthony Brooks
Authorities are investigating after a 26-year-old man was shot and killed by his brother during a domestic altercation inside their Oak Park home Sunday afternoon.
According to officials, Oak Park police were called to the 400 block of South Ridgeland Avenue around 1:47 p.m. after reports of a shooting. When officers arrived, they discovered Anthony Brooks, 26, suffering from a gunshot wound to the head. Paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene.
Investigators say the shooting occurred during a heated dispute between Brooks and his 23-year-old brother, with whom he shared the residence. A caller to 911 reported that they had instructed the suspect to unload the firearm and leave it inside the house before stepping outside, but moments later, shots were fired.
The suspect was taken into custody without incident and transported to the Oak Park Police Department for questioning. Authorities have not yet released his name pending formal charges.
Nearby residents and business owners described a heavy police presence as officers secured the area with crime scene tape for more than six hours.
The Village of Oak Park confirmed that the case remains under active investigation. Officials emphasized that there is no ongoing threat to the public.
This tragic incident marks one of several recent domestic-related shootings across the Chicago area, prompting renewed calls for conflict resolution and responsible firearm handling.
