Jacksonville Police Officer Shot; Suspect Still at Large

Authorities are searching for a suspect who remains at large after a Jacksonville police officer and a K9 unit were injured in a shooting Sunday evening.

According to the Jacksonville Police Department (JPD), the incident occurred around 4:41 p.m. in the area of Churchill Street and Benson Memorial Drive. During an encounter with the suspect, identified as 64-year-old Bobby Michael Dennis, an officer was shot and critically injured. The officer was airlifted to a Tyler hospital, where he underwent surgery and is now listed in stable condition.

A K9 unit was also injured in the shooting and is recovering at a local emergency veterinary hospital.

Authorities say Dennis fled the scene and is considered armed and dangerous, reportedly carrying a rifle. He was last seen wearing all black and driving a gray 2012 GMC Sierra with Texas license plate TRW3919.

The Texas Department of Public Safety issued a Blue Alert Sunday night to assist in the manhunt. Residents in the affected area have been urged to remain indoors, lock doors, and stay vigilant.

Neighbor Adrain Miller told reporters the incident came as a shock, describing Dennis as someone who had never shown violent behavior.

Due to the ongoing search, Jacksonville Independent School District announced schools will be closed Monday to ensure the safety of students and staff.

Anyone with information is urged to contact JPD or Crime Stoppers immediately.
