BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — Funeral arrangements have been announced for Julie Gard Schnuelle, a retired Auburn University professor who tragically lost her life last weekend. Schnuelle, 59, was found dead in the woods near Kiesel Park in Auburn while walking her dog. An autopsy later confirmed she died from stab wounds.

Schnuelle dedicated much of her career to the Department of Clinical Sciences in Auburn’s College of Veterinary Medicine, specializing in Large Animal and Food Animal care. She retired in 2021, leaving behind a legacy of compassion, mentorship, and excellence in veterinary medicine.

Authorities arrested 28-year-old Harold Rashad Dabney III, who has been charged with her murder.

Family and friends remember Julie as a devoted mother, wife, daughter, sister, and friend. Her son, Tyler, shared on social media: “Julie was a devoted Mother/Wife/Daughter/Friend/Sister and a brilliant veterinarian whose compassion knew no bounds. We are still grappling with this unimaginable reality and ask for your prayers, love, and understanding as we navigate our grief. Your respect for our privacy is deeply appreciated.”

A memorial service honoring her life will take place this Saturday at First Baptist Church on South 8th Street in Opelika. The service is scheduled to begin at 12:30 p.m., followed by visitation at 3:30 p.m.

In her memory, the Julie Gard Schnuelle Annual Scholarship Fund has been established to support students at Auburn’s College of Veterinary Medicine, ensuring her dedication to education and animal care continues to inspire future generations.
