Florida Woman Without Swimming Skills Saves 11-Year-Old Girl From Drowning
Fort Myers, FL – A Florida woman is being hailed as a hero after jumping into a lake to rescue 11-year-old Mia Garcia, despite not knowing how to swim herself.
The incident unfolded just after 10 a.m. Saturday, September 6, at Lakes Park in south Fort Myers. Mia had been collecting shells with her younger sister when she slipped into the lake. The shoreline was slick and slimy, making it impossible for the child to climb back out.
Panicked but quick-thinking, Mia began screaming for help — something her grandmother had taught her to do in emergencies. Those cries caught the attention of Bridgett Addison, who was nearby at a pavilion.
Without hesitation, Bridgett rushed toward the water. Though she had no swimming ability, she waded in, grabbed Mia, and pulled her to safety. Bridgett sustained minor injuries in the process but refused to stop until the girl was safe.
💬 “I don’t care who they are, what color, or what their disability is. If you can help somebody, you should,” Bridgett told reporters.
Thanks to her bravery, Mia escaped the terrifying ordeal unharmed, and the community is praising Bridgett’s selfless act of courage.
