CLAYTON, N.C. — A devastating multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 40 near Clayton claimed the life of 58-year-old Cheryl Elaine Boesel on Thursday afternoon, September 4, 2025.

The fatal wreck happened just before 4 p.m. near Exit 312 in the eastbound lanes and involved three vehicles. Authorities have since filed charges against two drivers in connection with the crash.

What Happened

According to the North Carolina Highway Patrol, Boesel was slowing in traffic near NC-42 when her vehicle was struck from behind by a red Ford F-150 driven by 51-year-old Scott Faircloth. The impact caused Faircloth’s truck to swerve off the right shoulder of the highway.

Moments later, a Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by 27-year-old Miriam Biviano collided with the rear of Boesel’s vehicle, adding to the chain reaction. Despite efforts by emergency responders, Boesel was pronounced dead at the scene.

The crash shut down the eastbound lanes of I-40 for several hours as investigators worked to piece together what led to the tragedy.

  • Scott Faircloth was charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle and failure to reduce speed.
