Charlie Kirk Shooting Suspect Identified as Michael Mallinson

OREM, Utah — Authorities have identified the suspect accused of opening fire on conservative activist Charlie Kirk during a speaking event at Utah Valley University as Michael Mallinson.

Officials released the first images of the man taken into custody following the incident, which occurred Wednesday afternoon as Kirk, founder of Turning Point USA, was addressing attendees on campus.

According to law enforcement, a single round was fired, striking Kirk as he spoke. Emergency personnel rendered immediate medical assistance before transporting him for treatment. His current condition has not yet been made public.

A university emergency alert confirmed Mallinson was quickly apprehended by campus and local police, preventing further injuries. Authorities stressed there is no ongoing threat to the campus community.

The shooting sparked chaos at the event, with viral videos showing attendees running for cover as law enforcement and security secured the scene.

National leaders quickly reacted to the news. Utah Senator Mike Lee urged prayers for Kirk and those in attendance, while Vice President JD Vance posted on X: “Say a prayer for Charlie Kirk, a genuinely good guy and a young father.”

Though the suspect’s identity has now been confirmed, investigators have not disclosed a possible motive. Local police are working with federal partners to review surveillance footage, interview witnesses, and gather evidence.

The investigation remains active, with more updates expected as authorities continue to process the scene.
