Peoria Police Investigate Double Shooting; Victim Lamelo Gilbert Dies from Injuries

PEORIA, Ill. — A deadly shooting in Central Peoria Sunday night has left one man critically injured, and the other with non-life-threatening injuries. Authorities have since identified the deceased victim as Lamelo Gilbert.

Peoria Police responded to the 3200 block of North Isabell Avenue around 8:15 p.m. Sunday after receiving reports of a shooting. Initially, officers did not find any victims at the scene. However, just moments later, police located two people suffering from gunshot wounds inside a vehicle near Isabell and West Merle Lane.

Lamelo Gilbert, a 29-year-old man, was rushed to a local hospital but later succumbed to his injuries. A woman in the vehicle, who has not yet been identified, also sustained a gunshot wound. She was treated at the hospital and is expected to recover.

The police spokesperson confirmed that the investigation is still ongoing, and authorities are working to determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting. They are reviewing surveillance footage and interviewing witnesses in the area.

No arrests have been made as of yet, and authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward.

The fatal shooting took place outside the International Cultural Center, where a tailgate event was in full swing after the university’s Homecoming football game. Witnesses described the scene as chaotic, with attendees running for safety as tents and tables were scattered across the parking lot.

Zecqueous Morgan-Thompson, a 21-year-old suspect, has been arrested and is being held at Chester County Prison on a $25,000 bail. He faces charges of carrying a firearm without a license.

The deceased victim, 25-year-old Jujuan Jeffers from Wilmington, Delaware, was tragically shot in the head. His identity was initially withheld pending family notification.

Six additional victims, all aged between 20 and 25, were injured in the shooting. Thankfully, authorities have stated that all are expected to recover.

34-Year-Old Jacob Lane Killed in Single-Vehicle Crash on Blue Jay Road in Effingham County

The Effingham County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a fatal single-vehicle crash that claimed the life of 34-year-old Jacob Lane late Friday night on Blue Jay Road near Finch Lane.

Deputies responded to reports of the crash shortly before 9 p.m. and discovered that Lane’s vehicle had veered off the road on the right side, crossed over Finch Lane, and struck a utility pole. Authorities confirmed that Lane died from his injuries at the scene.

Investigators are still working to determine what caused the vehicle to leave the roadway.

In a touching update, the Sheriff’s Office shared that Lane’s dog, Roxy, was also in the vehicle at the time of the crash. Thanks to the efforts of a Good Samaritan, Roxy was safely located and cared for until she was reunited with Lane’s family.

73-Year-Old Gary Cooney Dies Following Two-Vehicle Crash in Millsboro

Delaware State Police are investigating a fatal crash that claimed the life of 73-year-old Gary Cooney of Millsboro following a collision on Millsboro Highway Friday morning, October 24.

According to investigators, the crash occurred around 11 a.m. when a Mazda, stopped on Millsboro Highway just past Mumford Road, was waiting to make a left turn into a private driveway. At the same time, an Oldsmobile traveling behind the Mazda attempted to pass on the left for reasons still under investigation.

As the Mazda began turning left, the Oldsmobile swerved off the roadway, striking two garbage cans before crashing into the driver’s side of the Mazda. The impact caused the Mazda to veer into a nearby tree.

Police say the Mazda’s driver, a 69-year-old woman from Millsboro, sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was later released from the hospital. Her passenger, Gary Cooney, also from Millsboro, suffered serious injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital, where he tragically died the following morning, October 25.

The 34-year-old driver of the Oldsmobile, also from Millsboro, was not injured in the crash.

The roadway remained closed for approximately two hours as the Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit conducted an investigation.
