Charlie Kirk Dead After Utah Valley University Shooting, Suspect Still at Large
OREM, Utah — Conservative activist and Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk has died following a shooting during a speaking engagement at Utah Valley University on Wednesday, officials confirmed.
Utah House Speaker Mike Schultz announced Kirk’s death hours after emergency responders rushed him to the hospital. He had been struck by a single round while addressing students as part of his American Comeback Tour. Despite lifesaving efforts, Kirk succumbed to his injuries.
Early reports created confusion over a possible arrest. University spokesperson Scott Trotter initially said a suspect was in custody but later clarified no shooter had been apprehended. “The suspect is not in custody. Police are still investigating. Campus is closed for the rest of the day,” Trotter said prior to confirmation of Kirk’s death.
Authorities briefly detained Michael Mallinson of Payson, Utah, after bystander video showed him being handcuffed. Officials later confirmed Mallinson was not involved and cleared him of any connection.
Investigators have not yet identified the actual suspect or revealed a motive. Local and federal law enforcement continue to review surveillance footage, interview witnesses, and process evidence from the chaotic scene.
The shooting sparked panic on campus, with viral clips showing students and attendees fleeing as security rushed in.
National leaders reacted swiftly. Senator Mike Lee urged prayers for the community, while Vice President JD Vance called Kirk “a genuinely good guy and a young father.”
The university remains closed while the investigation continues.
