BREAKING: Suspect in Custody After Charlie Kirk Shot at Utah Valley University
OREM, Utah — Authorities say a suspect is in custody after conservative activist Charlie Kirk was shot during a campus event at Utah Valley University on Wednesday afternoon.
According to university officials, shots were fired from a building about 200 yards away from where Kirk was addressing students as part of his American Comeback Tour. Emergency responders rushed to the scene, providing immediate aid before Kirk was transported for further medical care. His current condition has not yet been released.
Officials stressed that the suspect, identified by some reports as Michael Mallinson, was detained without further incident, and there is no ongoing threat to the campus community. Authorities have not yet released an official confirmation of the suspect’s identity or a possible motive.
Videos circulating on social media show the chaos following the gunfire, with attendees rushing for cover as law enforcement secured the area.
The shooting quickly drew national attention. Utah Senator Mike Lee urged prayers for Kirk and the students gathered at the event, while Vice President JD Vance also posted support online, calling Kirk “a genuinely good guy and a young father.”
The event was Kirk’s first stop after resuming his speaking tour, which has often stirred controversy on college campuses.
Local police are working with federal partners, including the FBI and ATF, to process evidence, review security footage, and interview witnesses. The investigation remains active.
