Attempted Murder Arrest Following Early Morning Attack on Will County Deputy
WILL COUNTY, IL — A Will County Sheriff’s Deputy narrowly escaped injury early Wednesday morning after coming under fire during a traffic stop in Joliet Township. The suspect, identified as 20-year-old Tyshawn T. Harris, was taken into custody following a brief manhunt.
According to the Will County Sheriff’s Office, the incident occurred around 12:35 a.m. on October 29, 2025, when a deputy attempted to pull over a black Infiniti sedan for speeding and lacking a license plate near McDonough Street and Ottawa Street. The driver refused to stop and continued at a high speed before pulling over near Chicago Street and Doris Avenue.
Authorities say Harris exited the vehicle armed with an AR-15 style pistol and fired two rounds at the deputy before fleeing on foot. The deputy was not struck. A joint search with assistance from the Joliet Police Department and Illinois State Police resulted in Harris’s capture. The firearm and the stolen vehicle were both recovered.
Harris faces multiple charges, including Attempted Murder, Aggravated Discharge of a Firearm at a Peace Officer, and Possession of a Stolen Vehicle. Sheriff Mike Kelley praised the quick collaboration that led to Harris’s arrest, adding, “We are thankful our deputy is safe and that this dangerous individual is now in custody.”
The investigation remains ongoing.
