Two Killed, One Critically Injured in Head-On Collision on Owensboro Bypass
OWENSBORO, Ky. (Owensboro Times) — A devastating crash on the US 60 Bypass near the KY 54 overpass left two people dead and another critically injured Thursday afternoon, according to the Daviess County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO).
The collision occurred around 4:15 p.m. when an eastbound passenger car lost control just before the KY 54 off-ramp, overcorrected, crossed the median, and struck a westbound pickup truck head-on. The impact caused the passenger car to catch fire, with both vehicles sustaining catastrophic damage.
Sheriff Brad Youngman said two off-duty Whitesville firefighters witnessed the crash and were first to respond. Emergency crews from multiple agencies, including the Daviess County and Thruston Fire Departments, AMR Ambulance Service, and Owensboro Police, were dispatched to the scene.
Firefighters extinguished the flames and extricated the driver of the pickup truck, who was transported to Owensboro Health Regional Hospital in critical condition before being flown by Air Evac to a Louisville hospital. The driver and passenger of the sedan were pronounced dead at the scene by the Daviess County Coroner’s Office.
The bypass was closed for about five hours and reopened around 9:15 p.m. Authorities said the Accident Reconstruction Unit, with assistance from the Criminal Investigations Division and Owensboro Police Crime Scene Unit, is leading the investigation.
The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet and Kentucky State Police assisted with traffic control due to heavy congestion in the area.
