Criminal Investigation Underway After Deshler High Student Severely Injured
Tuscumbia, Ala., is grappling with questions and concern following a serious incident at Deshler High School on August 19 that left 15-year-old football player August Borden with multiple skull fractures. Details about what occurred remain limited, but the event has prompted a criminal investigation by the Madison County District Attorney’s Office.
Initially, the Tuscumbia Police Department and the Colbert County District Attorney’s Office were involved, but both recently stepped away. The Franklin County Juvenile Probation Office, along with Madison County DA officials, now oversee the case. Chief Deputy DA Tim Gann confirmed that their office was appointed by the Attorney General’s Office to lead the investigation following a recusal from Colbert County.
Community members and Borden’s family continue to seek answers. According to his stepfather, Drew Van Devender, the family is “patiently waiting for answers like most of the nation.” While school officials stated a supervisor was on site during the incident, no cameras were positioned in the area, and the circumstances surrounding Borden’s injuries remain unclear.
The case has sparked widespread concern and speculation about what happened after football practice that day, with public attention turning to questions of accountability and safety. Authorities have not provided a timeline for the investigation’s conclusion, emphasizing that it remains ongoing.
As the investigation continues, the community is left hoping for clarity and justice for August Borden. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of student safety, oversight, and transparency in school settings. Families, students, and officials alike await answers while supporting Borden’s recovery.
