Community Mourns Loss of Armuchee High Student-Athlete in Tragic Car Accident

The Floyd County community is in shock following the tragic death of 15-year-old David Clemones, a cherished student-athlete at Armuchee High School. The accident occurred Tuesday evening around 6:10 p.m. at the intersection of Georgia Loop 1 and Calhoun Road, when the red Chevrolet pickup in which Clemones was riding collided with a Dodge Ram driven by 56-year-old Matthew Mathis of Rome.

Clemones was a passenger in the pickup, driven by a 16-year-old student. Preliminary reports indicate the teen driver made a turn into the path of Mathis’ vehicle, resulting in a severe crash. Emergency responders rushed both vehicles’ occupants to Atrium Health Floyd. Tragically, Clemones succumbed to his injuries, while the other two involved were treated for non-life-threatening injuries. Authorities continue to investigate the incident, with potential charges pending against the teen driver.

At Armuchee High, Clemones is remembered for more than his athletic talent. Teachers describe him as diligent and dedicated, while classmates recall his humor, kindness, and warm personality. The school has provided grief counselors to support students coping with this loss.
