UPDATE: Michael Mallinson is not the suspect, Charlie Kirk shooter still not in custody

OREM, Utah — Confusion followed the aftermath of the shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University on Wednesday after officials clarified that a man initially detained was not the shooter.

University spokesperson Scott Trotter confirmed late Wednesday that the earlier reports were incorrect. “We can confirm that Mr. Kirk was shot, but we don’t know his condition. The suspect is not in custody. Police are still investigating. Campus is closed for the rest of the day,” Trotter said.

Initial alerts and some media reports suggested a man identified as Michael Mallinson of Payson had been arrested. Viral videos from the scene even showed an older man being detained. However, law enforcement later clarified that Mallinson was not responsible for the attack and has since been released.

Authorities now say the shooter remains at large, and investigators are actively reviewing surveillance footage, interviewing witnesses, and processing evidence. The suspect’s identity and possible motive have not yet been disclosed.

Kirk, founder of Turning Point USA, was addressing students when a single round struck him. Emergency responders quickly treated him before transporting him for further care. His condition has not yet been made public.

The shooting sent shockwaves across the campus, with videos online showing panicked attendees fleeing the scene. National figures including Sen. Mike Lee and Vice President JD Vance urged prayers for Kirk and the students present.

University officials confirmed that UVU will remain closed until further notice as the manhunt continues.
