Oakland, Calif. – September 4, 2025
A freeway shooting on Thursday afternoon left one person hospitalized and briefly shut down traffic on Interstate 880 in Oakland, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP).

The shooting occurred shortly before 2:45 p.m. in the southbound lanes near 66th Avenue. CHP confirmed that the victim was struck in the stomach and rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment. The individual’s condition has not yet been released.

Authorities immediately launched an investigation into the incident. As officers responded, all southbound lanes were closed around 3:15 p.m., creating major traffic delays during the afternoon commute. Investigators searched the roadway for shell casings and other evidence. By 4:25 p.m., all lanes had been reopened to drivers.

The vehicle involved in the incident was towed from the scene. However, no details have been provided regarding the make or model of the vehicle, nor have authorities confirmed how many occupants were inside.

At this time, no suspects have been arrested, and CHP has not released a description of any potential shooter. Investigators are working to determine whether the attack was targeted or random.

The incident comes as Oakland continues to grapple with ongoing concerns about freeway violence and roadway safety. I-880, a busy corridor connecting Oakland to the South Bay, has been the site of several violent incidents in recent years, prompting calls for enhanced highway patrols and surveillance technology to deter such crimes.

CHP is urging anyone with information or dashcam footage from the area around the time of the shooting to come forward. Witnesses can contact the CHP Golden Gate Division or submit tips anonymously.
