Swept Away by the Storm: The Tragic Loss of Poovin Narainsamy

After days of desperate searching and fading hope, police have confirmed the heartbreaking discovery of missing truck driver Poovin Narainsamy, whose body was found on a riverbank near Wolseley on Saturday.

Poovin was swept away on 11 May when violent flash floods along the R46 transformed roads into deadly rivers. In the chaos of the storm, his Scania R580 was dragged downstream by the raging waters as the Western Cape was battered by severe weather.

For days, family, friends, and fellow drivers held onto hope that somehow he would be found alive. But that hope ended in sorrow.

Forensic tests later confirmed his identity, while his truck once part of his daily journey and livelihood was recovered badly damaged far downstream, a silent witness to the terrifying force of the floodwaters that took his life.

Behind every truck on the road is a human being with loved ones waiting at home.
A father. A son. A friend. A hardworking man simply trying to do his job.

Today, the trucking community mourns one of its own.

Our hearts go out to Poovin’s family, friends, and colleagues as they face an unimaginable loss. His death is a painful reminder of the dangers drivers endure every day, especially in extreme weather where a single moment can turn fatal.

May Poovin Narainsamy rest in peace, and may his loved ones find strength in this time of unbearable grief.
