Victim Identified in Fatal Hit-and-Run Crash in Marshalltown

Authorities have identified the victim of a fatal hit-and-run crash Saturday night as 30-year-old Melanie Katherine Nelson of Marshalltown.

According to the Iowa State Patrol, the incident occurred around 10:05 p.m. on South 3rd Avenue, just south of East Main Street. Investigators say Nelson was attempting to cross the street when she was struck by a Dodge Ram pickup, which then fled the scene without stopping to render aid.

Emergency responders from the Marshalltown Fire Department transported Nelson to UnityPoint Hospital, where she was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

The suspect vehicle has not yet been located, and authorities are urging the public to assist in identifying the driver responsible. The Iowa State Patrol, with help from the Marshalltown Police Department, continues to investigate the case.

Anyone who may have witnessed the crash or has information about the vehicle involved is encouraged to contact local law enforcement immediately.
