DENVER, Colo. — The family of 18-year-old Matthew Silverstone has identified him as one of the two students wounded in Wednesday’s shooting at Evergreen High School, according to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.
On Thursday, Silverstone’s relatives released a photo and statement expressing gratitude for the community’s support while requesting privacy.
“The family appreciates the community’s concern and support, but as we remain focused on our loved one’s recovery, we respectfully request privacy as we continue to heal and navigate the road ahead,” the statement read.
The second victim’s family has also requested privacy and declined to release further information.
The shooting occurred shortly after 12:24 p.m. Wednesday, when a student opened fire both inside and outside the school. Two students were injured before law enforcement intervened. Both victims were taken to local hospitals; their current conditions have not been publicly released.
The incident triggered an immediate lockdown and a large police response, including deputies, school resource officers, and first responders. Officials commended students and staff for following lockdown procedures, noting the swift response likely prevented additional harm.
Community members across Jefferson County have begun organizing vigils and gatherings to support the victims and families. Crisis counselors have been deployed to Evergreen High School to provide ongoing mental health support.
Investigators continue to review surveillance footage, interview witnesses, and search for a motive. Authorities have not released the suspect’s name, citing the involvement of minors and the sensitive nature of the investigation.
