Authorities are investigating a deadly two-vehicle collision in Saluda County that claimed the life of a 76-year-old woman early Monday morning.
According to the Saluda County Coroner’s Office, the crash occurred on U.S. Highway 178 near Prater Road when a 2005 Honda Accord traveling west collided head-on with a 2022 Chevrolet Traverse heading east.
Officials with the South Carolina Highway Patrol reported that the driver of the Honda was attempting to flee from law enforcement at the time of the crash. The impact left both vehicles heavily damaged and led to multiple injuries.
Coroner Angie Rita identified the victim as Shirley Fincher of Saluda, who was a passenger in the Chevrolet Traverse. Fincher was pronounced dead at the scene due to injuries sustained in the collision.
Both drivers and the remaining passenger were transported by EMS to nearby hospitals for treatment. Their conditions have not yet been released.
“We extend our heartfelt sympathies to the family and friends of Mrs. Fincher,” the coroner’s office said in a statement.
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the pursuit and collision. Charges are pending as the South Carolina Highway Patrol and Saluda County Sheriff’s Office work jointly on the case.
