22-Year-Old Oak Lawn Man Killed in Crash at Chicago Ridge Intersection

CHICAGO, IL – A 22-year-old Oak Lawn man has died following a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of 99th Street and Harlem Avenue late Sunday night, an area long considered dangerous by residents.

The Cook County Medical Examiner identified the victim as Malik Aburas.

Chicago Ridge police said they responded to multiple 911 calls around 10 p.m. and found two vehicles with extensive damage and several people injured.

Emergency crews, including the Bridgeview Fire Department, transported four people to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn. Aburas, a passenger in one of the vehicles, succumbed to his injuries shortly after the crash. The driver of his vehicle suffered minor injuries and is expected to recover. Two occupants of the second vehicle remain in critical condition.

The intersection was shut down for several hours as the Suburban Major Accident Reconstruction Team (SMART) assisted with the investigation.

Police acknowledged the community’s concerns over safety at the intersection, citing 168 traffic citations issued since December 2023, many involving disobeying traffic signals and improper U-turns.

“The Chicago Ridge Police Department urges drivers to remain vigilant and cautious, particularly in high-traffic areas, to help prevent future tragedies,” Chief Jim Jarolimek said in a statement.

The investigation into the crash remains ongoing.
